Thursday 19 January: Public
Transport Walk – Rufford to Ormskirk.
Meet at Maghull station for the
10:16 train to Ormskirk. Change for the 10:36 Preston train
to Rufford, arriving at 10:45. Holders of Merseyside travel
passes have to pay the single fare from Ormskirk to Rufford,
which is about £3.50. Those without passes can book a through
ticket at Maghull. 10.2 Easy walk via the Rufford Branch Canal
to Top Locks, near Burscough, then over the fields to Ormskirk.
Return by bus or train to Maghull.
Sunday 29 January: Car Walk from Whalley (Ribble Valley)
Meet at Central Square at 9am for directions to Whalley (40
miles; 1 hour). 8.8 miles Moderate walk (875 ft of climbing to
Whalley Nab and Old Langho. Leader: Bill Morley.

Mr and Mrs Competition
Our next meeting will be at Maghull Royal British Legion at 7:30pm.
The Mr and Mrs competition will be hosted by Jeff Milne. This will
also be an opportunity to book for our coach trip on Sunday 12
February to Hayfield in the Peak District. Book with Sylvia Egan

Windermere Hydro 3rd to 6th
February 2012
There are still just a few rooms left for
this popular winter break. Contact Maggie Milne for details 0151-
548 4771. We also have a few seats left for our coach excursions to
Lancaster (Sat) and Hawkshead (Sun). Fare £4 for each trip. Book
with Maggie on Tuesday 3 January.
Tuesday 14 February: Car Walk.
Meet 1 pm at Rufford station car park
for a 4 mile Easy walk to Mawdsley Moss. Leader: Tom Griffiths.
Thursday 16 February: Public Transport Walk – Spital to Neston.
Meet at Maghull station for the 09:30
train to Central. Change to the Wirral Line for the 10:00 Chester
train to Spital, arriving at 10:18. 8.5 mile Easy walk via Raby Mere
and Willaston to Neston. Return by 487 bus to Liverpool. Leader:
John Dougherty.
Annual Dance 24th February 2012

Above are some of our members enjoying last year’s
dance. We are holding the next one on Friday 24 February at the
Maghull Royal British Legion, from 7.30 until late. This year
entrance is FREE! for our members. Just turn up and check in as a
member. Non-members pay £5 at the door. There will be a disco and a
free prize draw - collect your ticket when you come in. Bring your
own snacks for the interval if you wish.
Sunday 26 February: Car Walk from Jumbles Country
Park (Near Bolton)
Meet at Central Square at 9am for directions to Jumbles (35 miles; 1
hour). 8.8 miles Moderate walk (1225 ft of climbing) to Jumbles
Reservoir and Turton Tower. Leader: Margaret Schumacher.
Meeting: Tuesday 6 March at Maghull Royal British
Legion.
This will be a Bingo Night. You can also book for our next coach
trip to Slaidburn (Ribble Valley) on Sunday 11 March. Book with Stan
Williams on or after 6 March (0151-928 7980).

Holiday in Scarborough
April 2013

This coach holiday, arranged in
partnership with Airedale Tours, is based at the Red Lea Hotel,
located near the seafront in the East Coast resort of Scarborough,
and about half a mile from the town centre. The hotel has very good
feedback from Airedale clients and has been inspected by our
members. One group said: “We could not fault anything about the
hotel. Sarah [co-director] was so helpful and all her staff.
It was very, very good – one of the best we have been to.”
Accommodation is on a half board basis.
All rooms en suite with TV, radio, telephone and tea/coffee making.
Special diets are catered for. There is a lift to all floors except
lower ground. The hotel has an indoor pool and there is entertainment
on most nights. There are nine single rooms available without
supplement.

Pay a non-refundable deposit
of £30 per person to confirm your booking (cheques payable to A
Dougherty).
Pay the balance by monthly
instalments. Last payment due Tuesday 8 January 2013.
Non-members pay a £10
supplement per person (i.e. £335).
This is a non-profit
self-funding holiday and any surplus is used for the benefit of the
party.
Maghull Ramblers Coach to Hayfield: Sunday 12 February.
Our coach leaves Central
Square, Maghull at 8:15 am via M58, M6, M56, M60, M67 and A57 to
Glossop, arriving about 9:35 for a toilet stop. Continues via A624 to
Hayfield, where all parties alight at about 10:15.
A Party: Mount Famine and Kinder Downfall – Dave Schumacher.
12.2 miles; Hard; 2000 ft of climbing.
From Hayfield there is a 900 ft climb to the summit of Mount Famine
(1552 ft). This is followed by a cross-country trek to reach the
highest point of the walk on Kinder Low (2077 ft). The walk then
follows along a gritstone edge to Kinder Downfall and on to William
Clough, where the descent back to Hayfield begins. Arrive back at
about 4:30 pm.
B Party: Mount Famine and Cracken Edge – Peter Neild.
10 miles; Hard; 1875 ft of climbing.
This walk follows the A party route as far as Mount Famine but then
turns south towards Chinley. After reaching the main Hayfield road, the
walk starts a 900 ft climb to Cracken Edge before descending to Birch
Vale. The final leg of the walk is along the Sett Valley Trail into
Hayfield, arriving back about 4 pm.
C Party: Lantern Pike and Rowarth
– Colin Molloy.
8.9 miles; Moderate; 1075 ft of climbing.
This walk starts along the Sett Valley Trail to Birch Vale, from
where there is a 650 ft climb to the summit of Lantern Pike (1224
ft). The walk then descends to the village of Rowarth and across
country to Little Hayfield, returning back to Hayfield, at about
3:30 pm.
D Party: Sett Valley and The Torrs

7.7 miles; Easy; 450 ft of climbing.
This is a pleasant walk around the Sett Valley starting with a
stroll along the old railway track to Birch Vale and Thornsett,
before climbing up to the Pack Horse pub and over the golf course to
Brook Bottom. The walk descends into New Mills along the Goyt
valley. Here there is an opportunity to go into the town and the
Visitor Centre. The walk continues on the Millennium Walkway and
around The Torrs before following the old railway track back to
Hayfield, arriving back about 3:15 pm.
There are several pubs
and cafes in Hayfield. Non-walkers may wish to take a bus ride to
Buxton. Bus 61 leaves Hayfield bus station at 14 minutes past each
hour, returning from Buxton on the hour. Details of other services from
the Visitor Centre. Our coach leaves Hayfield at 5:45 pm. Back in
Maghull about 7:30 pm.
