Walk description.
This can be classed as a B/C walk with steady climbs on good wide paths and in good conditions there are fabulous views across the landscape.
Parking is in Abbeystead LA2 9BQ, continue through the village pass the school, over the small bridge and take the road directly on the right and there is a parking area next to the River Wyre. There are no toilets, shops or pubs.
Leaving the parking area we walk back over the bridge and follow the river for a little while then onto a minor road turning right towards Higher Lee. Once we pass the woods the terrain opens up and we follow a good track northwards over moorland towards Marjory’s Hill and Grizedale Head.Walking is easy although slightly uphill with views opening up across the landscape.
Lunch is at Grizedale Head where there is a “Luncheon Hut” (tables and benches in a hut used by the grouse shooters) this could be used during inclement weather.
Heading east towards Ward Stone Breast we reach the turn for the uphill track to Ward Stone trig point, this is a slightly harder climb taking about 20 minutes to the top and should be suitable for all walkers. There is an option for those not wanting to go up to the trig to wait and enjoy the views or alternatively if the weather is poor to carry on (with a walk leader) towards Tarnbrook and the Wyre Way back to Abbeystead.
