Detailed Walk Information

Our varied programme has three kinds of walks: by car, by public transport and by coach.

No prior booking is required for the first two – just turn up at the stated meeting point and make yourself known to the leader. Most Sunday car walks start from Central Square, Maghull (note the parking restrictions).

Walk Grading System

E – Easy. Less than 700 ft of climbing. Suitable for most walkers.
M – Moderate. 750 ft to 1500 ft of climbing. Average walkers.
H – Hard. 1500 to 2500 ft of climbing. Need to be quite fit.
S – Strenuous. over 2500 ft of climbing. Fit and experienced walkers only.

For example, on the programme, this will show as: H17 = Hard walk with 1700 ft of climbing.

8 9:30 am: Train Walk - Chester 9:30 am Saturday 08 November 2025 Meet at 9.30am at Maghull Station to take the next train to Liverpool and then to Chester for a 9.1m E3 walk to the Welsh border and the River Dee. Leader: Beth Ashby Latest update information from Beth: Meet a Maghull Station for the 9:48 train to Liverpool, then change at Moorfields for train to Chester. From Chester station, we walk down to the river and through the racecourse. We may not be able to walk through the racecourse as there is a big firework display on that evening, but we can walk around it. I have put the details of the display below in case some of you are interested in staying to watch it. Click this link for Chester Fireworks website: The Lord Mayor's Fireworks Extravaganza - Chester Racecourse The walk takes us along the River Dee on the Wales Coast Path, this is a good path that cyclists use too. The river is to our right with countryside on the left. After a couple of miles, we cross the border into Wales. Further down the path, we cross a footbridge and begin our return to Chester on the other side of the river. This is a narrower more traditional footpath. 25 10:30 am: Local Walk - River Alt 10:30 am Tuesday 25 November 2025 Meet at Central Square, Maghull at 10.30am, for a flat 7.5 mile Easy circular walk, Passing along the canal and the Alt bank. Leader: Elaine Kay, 7:30 pm: Monthly Club Social Meeting 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm Tuesday 25 November 2025 Meet at 7.30pm at Kensington House, Station Road, Maghull, L31 3DF. Here you can book on to the coach trip in January. New members are always welcome!

29 9:30 am: Car walk - Blackpool, Lancashire 9:30 am Saturday 29 November 2025 Meet at 1:30pm in Blackpool for an easy 9.9m circular walk around Stanley Park, Marton Mere, and Blackpool Illuminations Leader: Beth Ashby This walk is different to the one in the printed programme. As this is a later start, we will not be meeting at the station before we leave. Car sharing will have to be pre arranged Please park at Blackpool Central car park. It is a big multi storey, so we can fit in and start from the same place. The walk starts from the entrance to the car park at 1:30pm. From here we walk to Stanley Park, there are toilets here. From the park we walk through Marton Mere. This is a big chunk of unexpected countryside. We then make our way to Blackpool's North Shore and head towards the Tower through the Illuminations which should be on by then. I did the recce in trainers, it was slightly muddy in parts. No poles needed. Let me know if you are coming.

Public transport walks begin from the stated location and most are designed to make use of concessionary travel. Bus and train times may alter – we suggest you check www.merseytravel.gov.uk.

Coach trips are different and the following rules apply:

Seats on coaches must be booked and paid for in advance.
Booking opens at our monthly meeting. 7.30 pm on the last TUESDAY of each month in Kensington House, 12 Station Road, Maghull L31 3DF. There is ample parking at the front of the building.
The name and phone number of the person taking the booking is shown on the programme.
The current fares are:

Adult members: £15

Non-members: £18

Accompanied children under 16: £5

No refunds are given if a seat is not taken.
All coach trips start at Central Square, Maghull and leave promptly at the stated time.
