Walk Leader: Ken Sharp

Arrival at Aintree is 09.53. If you intend to join at Aintree please let me know in advance or contact Maghull Ramblers at the email address.

I will be travelling from Town Green to Maghhull on an earlier train and will be on the platform by 09.38.

The Walk

The walk starts by using the A59 from Aintree Station to reach the Liverpool Loop Line / The Trans Pennine Trail. The initial impression is of an urbanised walk but this is misleading as after reaching the route proper ahead lies a pleasant 3.5 mile section long the TP Trail, then a footpath passing to the south of Aintree Racecourse, and a good mile alongside the Leeds Liverpool canal before turning off at Holmes Swing Bridge and continuing to Melling.

Melling, a village and a parish within Sefton, is situated between the M58 and M57 motorways. But it also acts as guardian of a green corridor between Maghull and Kirby; our route continues northwards from Melling and into more rural countryside and eventually crossing the M58, and soon afterwards entering into Lancashire - but not for the first time!

We pass through Mossack Hall Golf Course, very enjoyable! The rural nature of the walk continues until we reach Town Green and the station. A little further is Authur’s wine bar and watering hole and the Daiiy Dose cafe for refreshments.

This may be a very local walk but it offers interest and contrast along the entire route. No hills. From memory just one stile. A mix of lanes and footpaths. There is one hopelessly overgrown path but with a choice of two diversions. Weather forecast is currently excellent, sunny 18-19 deg, light breeze, no rain.
